Joe D'Eustachio Current Topic Report The field of business management continues to evolve as organizations engage in the ever-changing global market. After years of unscrupulous corporate leaders managing and leading some of the world's biggest corporations to failure, researchers and business leaders realize the need for ethical and sound leadership. The need for ethical and sound leadership helps to facilitate and manage daily operations and to sustain their competitive advantage within the global economy. However, with this evolution, numerous research studies add to the understanding of leadership theories and the effects on organizational climate and culture. The following findings concentrate on research limitations, ethical standards, analysis of data and conclusions as they relate to the field of business management and research. Previously research conducted about leadership and management explained organizational culture and climate as employee driven behaviors with little regard to leadership styles. T he research explained employee personalities and outside influences as determents to organizational effectiveness with no relationship to leadership style or management . These studies presented a plethora of findings, as well as management theorists who supported these theories and often placed blame on employees for company failures frequently praising managers for successes. However, the question of leadership style enhances and stimulates an organization's climate and culture remains a topic for further research. Currently, the exploration of leadership theories encourages leadership styles that focus on participatory engagement, embracing of teamwork and service before self, encourage teamwork, and respect versus old styles involving autocratic and bureaucratic management styles . Two of the most recent theories to emerge within the 21st century involve servant and transformational leadership styles. In research conducted about servant leadership, researchers gave divergent views on the style and actual outcomes pertaining to organizational climate and culture . In a study conducted by Parris and Peachey, the reporting method of research utilized previous studies and articles about servant leadership and the underlying connections versus other methods . With a synopsis of various studies collated the findings revealed variances in definitions of servant leadership, measurements as they pertain to data analysis and varying degrees of limitations in research and conclusion of effectiveness . While the authors conducted a method of research dependent on previously written articles and data, the limitations of actual data and findings lessen the potential of skewed data and probable questions of ethical standards . Limitations revealed the lack of a clear definition pertaining to servant leadership, the attributes and organizational effectiveness. However, in a study conducted by Choudhary , research examined the impact of servant and transformational leadership as catalyst in sustaining corporate competitive advantage. The research considers the importance of organizational performance and the influential factors concerning leadership style. The purpose of the study defines its purpose by explaining the desire for comparison of two leadership styles and the potential outcomes of corporation effectiveness. The proposal of the study utilizes a descriptive method, which accounts for data collection and analysis of information. While the study examines the impact of both leadership styles in a non-profit environment it states the limitation as they apply to the public sector and the potential ethical dilemmas faced when applied incorrectly. In a study referring to non-profit leadership styles, the researchers examine the transformational leadership style and theories as they pertain the advantages to organizational climate and culture . The researchers defined the study as understanding leadership style effectiveness on organizational members and the impression derived from various styles. The design of the research assessed the psychological readiness of employees relating to leadership styles and the level of receptiveness to particular leadership styles. The research explained limitations while adequately explaining findings and conclusions made based on the study further providing data analysis and samples of hypothesis utilized for the research. The emergence of understanding leadership style and organizational climate/culture continues to foster divergence and misinterpretation between the variables. Current research centers on the characteristics of leadership styles and competitive advantage and the resulting mechanisms involved with upholding the direction of the company. Symbiotic Planet essays In Symbiotic Planet, author Lynn Margulis explains her Serial Endosymbiosis theory, which is a recent theory of how evolution occurred. While the book was rather dull at times the theory itself is very intriguing. Most people assume that humans are the most intelligent and capable inhabitants of Earth. However, Margulis SET theory gives a new insight of how humanity began. The theory says that it all began with four different kinds of bacteria. Each type of bacteria merged with another type and began the process of evolution. As different types of bacteria merged and joined together, different animals and plants emerged from the bacteria and became a new, more complex organism. Also in the book, Margulis expresses her belief that new genetic life forms arose and are still arising. It is as if she believes that humans emerged from bacteria. Because humans evolved from bacteria, bacteria can survive without humans. However, humans can not survive without bacteria. Although the book moved rather slowly, I enjoyed reading about Lynn Margulis theories and it gave new twist on evolution. When thinking about evolution, many people think of humans evolving from apes and animals evolving from dinosaurs. Most people do not think of bacteria as the source of how humans came to be. I would recommend this book to others who find the topic interesting or for people who are narrow minded. A Calm Mind Is A Healthy Mind For many people, a low-grade amount of stress is a part of everyday life. So, they may not recognize that it has a negative impact on their overall health. Studies have shown that feeling stress or anxiety on a long-term basis doesn’t just affect your peace of mind. In fact, you’re more likely to suffer from things like digestive issues and a weak immune system if your mind is persistently stressed. Cortisol, the hormone your body produces when you’re feeling stressed, can take a heavy toll on your physical and mental health. Because of this, giving your mind time to relax and recover is one of the most important self-care routines that you can practice. Your state of mind has the potential to greatly benefit your health, or degrade it, over time. Digestion Your liver produces glucose to give you an energy boost when your body is feeling the effects of stress. Whatever your body doesn’t use is then reabsorbed. However, if you’re suffering from chronic stress, your body may not be able to keep up with the extra blood sugar your liver is producing. You may be at an increased risk of developing type-2 diabetes if your body is producing too much glucose. You’re more likely to have heartburn or acid reflux if you suffer from stress. Stress doesn’t cause ulcers, but it may cause pre-existing ulcers to act up. Sexuality and Reproductive System Stress affects the menstrual cycles of some women. You may have irregular or even non-existent periods or more painful or heavier cycles. Too much stress may magnify the physical symptoms of menopause for women. For men, prolonged periods of stress can result in a drop of testosterone levels, erectile dysfunction and even impotency. For many, the loss of sexual appetite is a common occurrence as a result of too much stress. Immune System Stress is known to stimulate the immune system, which is good if it’s short-term because it helps your body stave off infection and heals wounds. But if you’re stressed for prolonged periods of time, cortisol compromises your immune system. This inhibits histamine secretion and your body’s inflammatory response to foreign dangers. People who are affected by chronic stress are more likely to catch viral illnesses like the common cold. It also takes more time for the body to recover from injuries or illness, if you’re chronically stressed. Relaxation Techniques to Calm Your Mind There are numerous techniques for calming your mind. For some, exercise is an excellent outlet to give their mind time to recharge. Meditation is a well known method for clearing your mind. There are many different styles of meditation, tailored to suit your needs and lifestyle. Remember to focus on the positives rather than focusing on everything that’s going wrong around you. Practice self love and compassion and acknowledge your reality rather than criticizing yourself. Set daily routines that will provide a day-to-day sense of peace and comfort that you can use to escape the stresses of everyday life, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day. The well-being of your mind plays a very significant role in your health, physically and mentally. Maintaining a peaceful state of mind is one of the best ways to protect your body from the negative effects of stress. Remember that stress and anxiety are inevitable hurdles everyone deals with. Samsung has always been the company to combat Apple the most, with their products being similar to Apple’s. Samsung is actually one step ahead of Apple with this current idea. Claire Carlson English 3H February 7, 2013 Period 1 Spring Essay: Turn of the Screw Page I: The Governess and Miles Page II: The Governess and Mrs. Grose Page III: Corruption of Innocence Henry James’s Turn of the Screw is the eerie tale of a governess sent to care for two mischievous young children, Flora and Miles. Many people mistake it for a ghost story, but the story actually focuses more on the governess’s relationship with the children. Her thirst for acceptance gradually grows as the story progresses, and she becomes especially fascinated with Miles.Women have always been viewed as slightly inferior to men; they are depicted as weak and fragile creatures, only serving as a companion for man. They are manipulative and often use charm and looks as methods of persuasion. In Turn of the Screw, the governess ‘s attitude while around Miles is flirtatious and almost inappropriate; and she uses him to fill the void of the children’s beloved uncle whom she l usts for. The above example of the governess’s craving for Miles’s attention can be easily compared to the behavior exhibited by much of the female population today.Note that the woman is always seeking to please the man, and strives to satisfy and serve him. The attitude of women in the modern world is becoming more and more submissive; almost voluntarily. Miles’s reaction to the behavior of the unnamed governess is merely compliant, and in some instances of the novel he somewhat encourages her inappropriate behavior. Mrs. Grose, the simpleminded and somewhat slow housekeeper at the estate, represents a middle ground between the mischievous children and whimsical governess. The reader can easily conclude that the governess abuses Mrs.Grose’s quite malleable opinion of the children. In several instances, the governess consults Mrs. Grose and uses her as an outlet for her frustrations with the children. As the governess shares her ghostly encounters with Q uint and Miss Jessel, she convinces Mrs. Grose that her hysteria is justified. Since Mrs. Grose is not significantly talkative, it is difficult to form a conclusion about her opinion of the children and the governess. The reader has to infer that Mrs. Grose has spent quite some time at the estate, and has much experience with the children’s behavior. Mrs.Grose doesn’t necessarily agree or disagree with the statements and assertions made by the governess, she is merely a cache, storing the governess’s thoughts and responding with uncomprehending feedback. The children’s relationship with Mrs. Grose is somewhat distant and peculiar. They only consult her for affirmation and approval. In conclusion, Mrs. Grose is mainly an unresponsive character and is not a major influence on the circumstances of the story. Since the governess seldom approaches the children directly, we can infer that she would rather keep her knowledge of Quint and Jessel to herself.She of ten consults Mrs. Grose in order to gather as much as she can about the two. The governess is afraid that the children know too much, and fears that their knowledge of Quint and Jessel’s sexual relationship will affect them negatively. The fact that she is more concerned about the children knowing too much rather than protecting them from the possible harm that the ghosts can inflict, shows the reader that the governess incorporates her own fears and desires into the situation. In conclusion, Turn of the Screw is a much more complex and confusing story than meets the eye.The reader must question the behavior of the governess and the children in order to gather valuable information about the ghosts, and it seems as though in certain instances that Quint and Jessel are living through Flora and Miles. The governess is indeed a much more questionable character than the book portrays her to be. From my experience with both the book and a movie interpretation of the book, I have co ncluded that the governess is actually the main source of the hysteria and trauma at Bly.

Alan Bennet’s “Talking Heads” – A monologue commentary

After reading a selection of monologues from Alan Bennett's â€Å"Talking Heads†, I was inspired to right one of my own. In my monologue the focus is on a young girl who lives alone with her father, who abuses her. The title, ‘A father's love', is ironic because if her father loved her, then why would he abuse her? This links to the monologues written by Alan Bennett as he also uses the technique of irony to engage the audience. The opening stage directions show some aspects of the character's lifestyle, â€Å"Emma sits on a battered leather armchair in a plain living room† From reading this, the audience will be able to identify the poor lifestyle that the girl experiences; this is also shown in a further set of stage directions â€Å"Emma is washing dishes in a basic, untidy looking kitchen.† In both instances there are hints of poverty, yet her father finds enough money to go to the pub at night. This helps to reveal her father's character and his priorities. In the first section of the monologue there is no clue as to what the problem could be, but as the monologue progresses the clues become clearer and the audience may have more of an idea of what the girl is experiencing. For example, â€Å"I said I was sorry about the medication but it really wasn't my fault, there wasn't a need for the way he reacted.† There it becomes obvious to the audience that the girl's father has a bad temper. This idea is developed in the next section of the monologue as the girl debates whether or not to go to school. It now becomes apparent that he has hit her. To create a more obvious clue I had to re draft my monologue in order for the audience to pick up on the problem, â€Å"How can I go to school with a face like this†¦ I could just tell everyone I fell down the stairs.† The clues are really subtle at first but do become more obvious as the monologue progresses. I tried to create tragedy in the monologue by portraying the young girl as feeling alone in the world; she lives alone with her bad tempered father who drinks a lot. The tragedy is that she doesn't want to walk out on her father but she knows that it's not safe for her to stay. I think that the audience could identify this in the monologue. In my monologue, it shows the father suprising the young girl with a shopping trip; this was only through guilt. The last set of stage directions shows that the girl is frightened and that her father hasn't changed.
